Someone searching for desktop time tracking software usually means something specific. An application that is installed, that opens quickly, that does not change its layout because a release went out somewhere, and that belongs to the machine where the work happens. That distinction has blurred over the past decade, but it has not disappeared.
Desktop and browser, one administration
TimeWriter exists as a desktop application for Windows, macOS and Linux and as a browser client. These are not two products; they look at the same administration. People with a fixed workstation use the application, people travelling or on a borrowed machine open the browser client.
That removes a choice many packages force on you. You do not have to decide whether yours is a desktop organisation or a browser organisation, because it can differ per person without doubling the administration.
In practice a mix emerges on its own. Office staff use the application because it is faster for many entries in a row, field staff open the browser client on a tablet, and both groups see the same clients, projects and balances.
What the installed application is better at
The differences are unglamorous, and they are exactly the ones daily users notice.
it starts quickly and stays open all day
keyboard work is fast: many entries without reaching for a mouse
it does not depend on whichever browser version somebody runs
its layout stays put, which matters more than any new feature
a local database is possible for a single user working offline
That last point applies to the free single-user edition, where the native Windows and Mac clients can work against a local database. Worth knowing: with a local database the backups are your own responsibility.
What it costs to run
Rolling out an application sounds heavier than it is. The installation is an ordinary one a user can perform, and updates follow the same route. Administrators working with a deployment tool fold it into their existing procedure.
Configuration deserves more attention than installation. Clients, projects, activities and rates determine what later comes out of the reports, and that is the part worth setting aside an afternoon for rather than deciding as you go.
Why it was never retired
A hosted service is easy to distribute, but it puts your data somewhere else and works only while the connection holds. For some organisations neither is an objection; for others both are. The desktop application therefore remains the full half of the product rather than a legacy remnant.
Organisations that want to go further run the database inside their own network with Pro, which is a separate decision from whether people use the application or the browser.
Where the browser client wins
None of this is an argument against the browser. For someone who records twice a week, opening a page beats installing anything, and for a machine you do not control it is the only sensible option. The point is that the two coexist rather than one replacing the other.
The same is true of a laptop that travels between home and office. The application keeps working when the connection drops on a train, and syncs when it returns, which is the situation the browser client handles least well.
Which edition you need
All three editions include both clients. Freeware covers one user, Standard adds invoicing, leave and budgets for teams up to around 25 FTE, and Pro handles approval, groups and roles above that. The product matrix sets out which feature sits where.
Moving between editions does not require reconfiguring anything: the administration comes along, including clients, projects and recorded hours.
